In part because I graduated from my Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, and also because I am an educator (Brown University, 1970-75), and have observed the liberal arts curriculum first hand (Brown University) In my opinion, education should integrate studies in art along with other areas of study. Not surprising for an ethnomusicologist (MA 1967, PhD at UCLA)! There is no surprise that the department of ethnomusicology at UC Berkeley, where I was an instructor from 1975 to 1976 is located in the College of Letters and Science's Department of Music. I like pursuing multiple pursuits and looking at the whole overall picture. I really enjoy teaching, both students in the undergraduate level (majors as well as non-majors for whom I have written three textbooks-Music in India: the Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, as well as Music in Japan: Experiencing Music, Expressing Culture) as well as graduate students. Thereafter, I'll switch between periods of primarily academic activities and periods of administrative duties (I served as Chair of Department of Music from 1983 to 1988, Dean for undergraduate Advising between 1992 and 1998, as well as Chair of College of Letters and Science Deans 1994-98; Chairperson of the Group of Asian Studies since 1999 and am now back as Chair of the Department of Music).
